Jwalamukhi Devi Temple

jwalamukhi, KangraAltitude: 610 mDeity: Jwalaji (Goddess of eternal flame)

History

One of the 51 Shakti Peeths, Jwalamukhi is where the tongue of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. The eternal blue flames — burning without any visible fuel — have drawn pilgrims for over a thousand years. Even Mughal emperor Akbar visited and offered a gold umbrella, which the flame legendarily rejected.

Established: Ancient (rebuilt by Raja Bhumi Chand Katoch)

Architecture

Modest structure with a gilded dome donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1815. The sanctum has no idol — worship is offered directly to nine natural flames named after nine forms of the goddess.

Mythology & Legend

When Vishnu dismembered Sati's body to release Shiva from grief, her tongue fell here. The nine eternal flames represent Mahakali, Annapurna, Chandi, Hinglaj, Bindhya Basni, Mahalakshmi, Saraswati, Ambika and Anji Devi.
