Tsuglagkhang & Dalai Lama's residence
Free entry. Attend morning prayers 8 am, join the kora (circumambulation) with monks, and check the teaching schedule for public darshans.

The Dhauladhar range rises like a 4,000-metre wall behind Dharamshala, McLeodganj, and Bir — the three towns that make Kangra Valley India's Tibetan capital, its paragliding capital, and its most walkable Himalayan hill station all at once.
This isn't one destination — it's a valley. Dharamshala for the government-town buzz, McLeodganj for the monks and momos, Bhagsu for the waterfalls, Dharamkot for the yoga crowd, Palampur for the tea gardens, and Bir-Billing for the world's second-highest paragliding launch.
Free entry. Attend morning prayers 8 am, join the kora (circumambulation) with monks, and check the teaching schedule for public darshans.

The Dalai Lama's personal monastery. Morning debates, evening chanting, and one of the best gift shops for authentic thangkas.
Dharamshala means 'spiritual dwelling'. In 1960, after fleeing Tibet, the 14th Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile settled in upper Dharamshala (McLeodganj). The Namgyal Monastery and Tsuglagkhang Complex have made this the second-holiest city in Tibetan Buddhism.
Half the town speaks Tibetan. The other half speaks Kangri. Momos, thentuk, and butter tea are as common as pakoras. April brings the Dalai Lama's teachings; December brings the Winter Line festival at Kangra Fort.
The Dhauladhar ('white ridge') — a 4,000-m mica-schist wall — rises straight from the 900-m valley floor, giving Dharamshala one of the world's most dramatic mountain-town backdrops. Below it: the Kangra Valley's tea gardens, apple orchards, and rice terraces.
Only city in the world where you can attend a teaching by the Dalai Lama, walk into a 1,000-year-old fort (Kangra), paraglide from 2,400 m in Billing, and eat authentic Tibetan momos — all in the same trip.
