Key Monastery
1,000-year-old fort-monastery on a conical hill. Stay overnight in the guesthouse (₹500 dorm) for the 5 am prayer and morning butter-tea.

Spiti — literally 'the middle land' between India and Tibet — is a high-altitude cold desert of 4,000-metre villages, thousand-year-old monasteries, and a landscape so lunar that ISRO trains rovers here. Not a place to relax. A place to be changed.
Two roads reach Spiti — the low route via Shimla-Kinnaur (open all year) and the high route via Manali-Rohtang-Kunzum (Jun–Oct only). Do them both if you can: enter one, exit the other. The circuit takes 10 days and everything changes on day 4.

1,027 years old, UNESCO-track, 'Ajanta of the Himalayas' murals inside mud-walled chambers. Photography strictly prohibited inside.
Komic (4,587 m), Hikkim (post office 4,440 m), Langza (fossil village) — all reachable by car from Kaza.

Detour from Attargu to Mudh village. Trans-Himalayan wildlife (ibex, blue sheep, red fox) and the Bhaba Pass trek out to Kinnaur.
Spiti was part of the Guge kingdom of western Tibet from the 10th century. Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 AD by translator Rinchen Zangpo, is the oldest continuously functioning Buddhist enclave in the Himalayas — a UNESCO-track site with fresco murals older than Angkor Wat.
Tibetan Buddhism (Gelugpa & Nyingma orders), Bhoti script, butter tea, tsampa, and monasteries where monks debate philosophy in the courtyard at 5 am. Every village hosts a Chham (mask) dance in summer.
The Spiti river — a Sutlej tributary — flows through a rain-shadow desert walled in by 6,000-m peaks. Villages like Komic (4,587 m) and Hikkim (world's highest post office) sit on plateaus above the river. Chandratal Lake is the trip's aesthetic peak.
Only region in India where you can visit a 1,000-year-old functioning monastery, see snow leopard in the wild (Kibber sanctuary Feb-Mar), post a letter from the world's highest post office, and drink chai at a homestay owned by the same family for 20 generations.
Everyone does Kaza-Key-Kibber-Chandratal. Add Mudh (last village in Pin Valley), Demul (community homestays), Langza-Komic-Hikkim triangle at sunrise, and a night at Nako on the way back.
