Kullu & Manali
The Valley of the Gods — 200 temples, one river, four seasons.

Before Manali became Manali, the Beas valley was the Kullu kingdom — a mountain state ruled from wooden palaces, defended by 200 village devtas, and famous for its handloom shawls, apple orchards, and the world's largest congregation of gods every October at Dussehra.

02 — The story

Why Kullu & Manali, really.

Kullu-Manali is really three destinations in one: Kullu town (temples, Dussehra, rafting), Naggar (heritage castle, Roerich estate), and Manali (adventure, snow, cafés). String them together with the Sissu-Atal Tunnel run and you cover the entire Beas from source to gorge.

Kullu Dussehra

Every October, 200+ village devtas descend on Dhalpur ground for 7 days of mask dances, folk music, and the biggest devta congregation on earth.

Solang + Atal Tunnel

Ski, paraglide, snow tube at Solang; then punch through the 9-km Atal Tunnel to Sissu in Lahaul for lunch and be back by evening.

Naggar Castle

500-year-old wooden fort now a heritage HPTDC hotel. Rooms with a view of the entire Beas valley from ₹3,500.

Manikaran + Parvati

1-hour detour to the sulphur-spring gurudwara. Add a day to push into Kasol/Tosh.

Rafting the Beas

Pirdi to Jhiri, 14 km of Grade II–III rapids, ₹700 pp. Season Mar–Jun.

Great Himalayan gateway

Access point for GHNP (Sainj/Tirthan side) and the Hampta Pass trek into Lahaul.

History

The Kullu kingdom lasted 1,500 years. Its Dussehra — declared International Kullu Dussehra — brings 200+ village deities on shoulder-carried palanquins to Dhalpur ground every October, a spectacle nowhere else in the Hindu world.

Culture

The Kullu shawl, the Kullvi cap, and the tepid dham feast served on leaf plates are alive here — not staged. Naggar's Nicholas Roerich gallery preserves the Russian mystic-painter's Himalayan work in the castle where he lived from 1928 to 1947.

Geography

The Beas river runs the length of the valley from its source at Beas Kund (near Rohtang) down through Manali, Kullu, and out through the Aut tunnel into Mandi. The Pir Panjal walls it in on the west; the Bara Bhangal on the east.

What makes it unique

Only valley in India with a 4,000-m tunnel (Atal Tunnel) that dropped Sissu from a 7-hour Rohtang crossing to a 1-hour drive — turning Lahaul into a same-day trip.

Hidden gems teaser

Skip Mall Road on the second day. Drive to Naggar Castle, walk to Roerich's estate, eat trout at Jana Falls, and come back via the Rumsu ridge — all in 6 hours, all empty.
