Safety in Himachal

The honest guide we'd give a friend on their first trip.

Nothing scary — Himachal is one of India's safest travel states. But mountains, weather, and long drives have real rules. Here's what we tell everyone.

For women travelers

Notes from Simran, who travels solo here often.

How we vet drivers

Five checks before a name makes the list.

  1. 1. Ridden with, twice.

One of us has done the full route with the driver — including a night drive if the route needs one.

  2. 2. Commercial license + fitness certificate.

Photocopies on file. Renewed each year.

  3. 3. Vehicle inspection.

Tyres, brakes, spare, first-aid, chains for winter routes. Photographs updated every 6 months.

  4. 4. Reference from another driver.

We call one driver who's known them 5+ years. The mountain community is small.

  5. 5. Zero-strike policy.

One credible complaint from a guest and they're off the list. No warnings, no gray zone.

Road-condition honesty policy

If a pass is sketchy, we'll say so — even if it costs us the booking.

We check BRO and local WhatsApp groups every morning. Rohtang, Kunzum, Baralacha, Jalori, and the Kinnaur–Spiti stretch are updated on the destination pages within a few hours of a closure.

We reroute or refund. If a road shuts after you've booked, we either find an alternate route (Atal tunnel bypass for Rohtang, for example) or return your money in full. No debate.

We won't sell Spiti in winter to first-timers. Nov–Apr Spiti is for experienced high-altitude drivers with the right vehicle. We'll tell you no, then help you plan the summer trip instead.

Monsoon (Jul–early Sep) — extra caution. Landslides are unpredictable. We add a buffer day to every itinerary and won't book you back-to-back long drives.

Something happened on your trip?

Message us. We answer 8am–10pm, and for emergencies, at any hour.
