Shimla
The Queen of Hills

Shimla was the summer capital of British India for 89 years — and it still wears the crown. The smart trip pairs it with Chail, Kufri, Narkanda and Mashobra for a full week of colonial architecture, toy-train rides, apple orchards and reliable winter snow.

Why visit Shimla

Shimla is not just the postcard — the Mall, the Ridge, Christ Church every schoolbook shows. It is a full circuit: Chail's forest palace 45 km south, Kufri's high-altitude zoo 16 km east, Mashobra's presidential retreat 13 km north, and Narkanda's ski slopes 62 km further up. Most visitors stop at Mall Road and leave. That is a mistake. The five-town circuit is what makes Shimla worth a week of your life.

The British discovered Shimla in 1819 when a young officer named Charles Kennedy built himself a wooden cottage on Jakhu ridge. By 1864 it was the summer capital of British India — the entire imperial government, wife and servants and paperwork, moved here every May and left every October. For 75 years, the world's largest empire was run from a Tudor-style hill town at 2,276 m. That history is not curated in a museum — it is the town. Every third building on Mall Road is a listed heritage structure. The Gaiety Theatre (1887) still stages plays. Christ Church (1857) still holds Sunday service. The Viceregal Lodge, where the 1947 partition was drafted and the 1972 Simla Agreement was signed, is open to the public for ₹85.

Geography did the rest. Shimla sits on seven hills — Jakhu, Prospect, Observatory, Elysium, Bantony, Summer, and Inverarm — knitted together by ridge walks and a pedestrian-only Mall Road (pedestrian since 1863, one of the first in Asia). The Sutlej valley falls away 1,000 m to the south. The main Himalayan range rises to the north-east, snow-capped Nov–Apr. The forest is deodar, oak, and rhododendron, thick enough that you can walk 40 minutes from Christ Church to Jakhu temple and not cross a road.

Culture is layered. Colonial Anglo-Indian architecture sits next to Hindu shikhara temples. Kalibari temple (1845) is a shakti-peeth. Jakhu temple has a 108-foot Hanuman statue at 2,455 m — the highest point in the town, visible from every ridge. Bhattiyat cuisine from the Pahari hills sits on the same menu as Anglo-Indian roast and Punjabi tandoor. In summer, the town hosts the Summer Festival (June); in winter, HPTDC's Winter Carnival at Kufri and the Christmas Eve service at Christ Church. Neither is a manufactured tourist event — both have run for 40+ years.

The reason to add the neighbours: Kufri alone is a weekend zoo trap (Indians know), but Kufri + Fagu + Narkanda is a genuine high-altitude drive with apple orchards and skiing. Chail Palace, built by the Maharaja of Patiala after the British banned him from Shimla for 'inappropriate behaviour', has the highest cricket ground in the world at 2,444 m and rooms in the original 1891 palace from ₹6,500 a night. Mashobra houses the Presidential Retreat 'The Retreat' (President of India's official summer residence) and Wildflower Hall, an Oberoi hotel in a forest at 2,593 m — the most expensive room north of Delhi and worth every rupee for a honeymoon.

Who should visit

  • Families with kids 5–15: toy train, Kufri Fun World, walkable Mall Road, best hospitals in HP.
  • Senior citizens: no altitude sickness (2,276 m), Volvo access, flat Ridge walks, doctor availability.
  • Couples & honeymooners: Wildflower Hall, Oberoi Cecil, quiet Mashobra walks, Chail Palace stays.
  • History & architecture fans: Viceregal Lodge, Gaiety Theatre, Bantony Estate, colonial heritage walk.
  • Snow tourists: guaranteed snow Jan–Feb at Kufri/Narkanda, one of India's most reliable snow destinations.
  • Weekend travellers from Delhi/Chandigarh: closest 'real' hill station, 8 h Volvo, no altitude issues.
  • Solo travellers: safest hill town in North India, cheap YMCA + café circuit, easy public transport.

Who should skip

  • Adventure purists chasing solitude — Mall Road is genuinely crowded May–June and Dec–Jan.
  • Anyone hoping for 'untouched' Himachal — this is the most developed hill town in HP.
  • Monsoon (Jul–Aug) travellers wanting mountain views — clouds close in, landslides on Kalka road.
  • Budget backpackers hoping for ₹500 rooms — those exist only in shared dorms; the town is not cheap.

Hours · 24 hours (safe till late — town patrols Mall)
Season · Year-round. Snow makes it magical Dec–Feb.

Temple · Viewpoint

Jakhu Temple & Ropeway

108-foot Hanuman statue at 2,455 m — the highest point in Shimla and visible from every ridge. The temple below is where Hanuman is said to have rested while carrying the Sanjeevani mountain in the Ramayana. Fair warning: the monkeys are aggressive and will grab spectacles and phones.

The single most important building in modern Indian history that isn't in Delhi. Built 1888 in mock-Elizabethan style for Viceroy Dufferin. The 1947 partition of India was negotiated here. The 1972 Simla Agreement with Pakistan was signed in the same room. It is now an academic institution — you can walk in with a guide for ₹85.

Chail Palace & World's Highest Cricket Ground
Day trip · Palace stay

Chail Palace & World's Highest Cricket Ground

45 km south of Shimla at 2,250 m, built by the Maharaja of Patiala in 1891 after the British banned him from Shimla for allegedly running off with a viceroy's daughter. He responded by building a bigger palace on a bigger hill. The Palace Hotel operates in the original building; the cricket ground (2,444 m) is a 20-min uphill walk.

Time · Full day trip from Shimla · overnight ideal
Fee · Palace entry ₹50 non-guests · Cricket ground free · Sanctuary ₹100
Hours · Palace grounds 9 am – 6 pm
Season · Mar–Nov best. Snow closes cricket ground Jan–Feb but palace stays open.
Kufri & Fagu
Snow · Family day trip

Kufri & Fagu

Kufri (2,720 m, 16 km from Shimla) is the region's snow day-trip point. It gets aggressively crowded on Saturdays and holidays — go on a weekday morning or skip in favour of Narkanda.
