Kufri (2,720 m) is the closest reliable snow to Shimla — 16 km east on the Hindustan-Tibet road, sitting under Mahasu Peak (2,940 m) in the Shivalik-fringe deodar belt. From November to March it becomes Delhi's easiest snow escape; the rest of the year it's a viewpoint, wildlife park, and the trailhead for Kufri Fun World, Fagu apples, and the Chail palace circuit.
Kufri exists as North India's most accessible snow point — 16 km from Shimla, doable as a day trip, reliable snow every December to March. In summer it's the trailhead for Mahasu Peak pony walks, Himalayan Nature Park (rare Himalayan monal, snow leopard), and Fagu apple orchards. Best used as a Shimla + Kufri combo, not a standalone.
The name Kufri comes from 'kufer', meaning 'lake' in local Pahari — the small lake beneath Mahasu Peak that froze every winter and gave the place its name. British administrators from Shimla used it as a ski + winter recreation ground from the 1900s; the first Winter Sports Festival in India was held here in 1970 by the HP Tourism Department.
Mahasu Peak (2,940 m) is the natural highlight — 30-min pony ride or a stiff 45-min walk from the road brings you to the summit temple + 360-degree view. Weather permitting, you see the Choor Chandni range (3,650 m) south, the Pir Panjal north, and on rare clear days the tip of the Kinnaur Kailash range 200 km east.
Kufri's problem is overcrowding — 8-lakh-plus Delhi tourists in December alone create a chaotic road-side scene of yak rides, souvenir shops, and 'authentic Himachali dress' photo booths. The trick is to visit at 8 am before the buses arrive, or stay overnight and walk to Mahasu at 6 am with just the pony boys and monal calls.
Kufri has two natural extensions: Fagu (5 km east, apple orchards + HPTDC bungalow + far quieter than Kufri) and Chail (45 km via Fagu-Kufri road — Bhupendra Singh of Patiala's exile-era palace, world's highest cricket ground at 2,444 m, and dense pine forest). Combined they make a perfect 3-day Shimla loop.
