Chandratal
The Moon Lake of the Cold Desert

Chandratal — 'Lake of the Moon' — sits at 4,300 m on a wind-scoured shelf between the Kunzum and Baralacha ranges. A crescent-shaped alpine lake, 2.5 km around, that changes colour from turquoise at dawn to deep blue by mid-day to violet at sunset. Reachable only from mid-May to mid-October, camping capped, phones dead, and the Milky Way in July so bright you can read a paperback by its light.

Why visit Chandratal

Chandratal is one of the highest lakes in India you can drive to — a 400-year Buddhist pilgrimage site turned once-a-year alpine window. The road opens when Kunzum La (4,590 m) clears in mid-May and closes when snow shuts it in mid-October. That 5-month gap is your entire window.

The lake sits on a moraine shelf carved by an ancient glacier. Water enters via seeping snowmelt from the Chandrabhaga range around and exits via a small stream that eventually joins the Chandra river (which pairs with the Bhaga river at Tandi to become the Chandrabhaga / Chenab). Depth is 20 m at centre. Circumference 2.5 km. The colour shifts through the day are real and pronounced — turquoise at first light, deep sapphire mid-day, violet at 7 pm, then black under the Milky Way.

Access has two approach routes. From Manali (west): drive through Atal Tunnel to Gramphu (75 km, 2 h), then east on the old rough Manali–Kaza road via Chhatru, Chhota Dhara, and Batal (100 km, 6 h). From Batal a rough 14 km 4WD spur climbs to the Chandratal camps (2 h). From Kaza (east): drive west via Losar and Kunzum La (85 km, 3 h) then south on the same spur. The Kunzum La approach is more scenic and easier on the vehicle but requires the pass to be open (usually late May onwards).

Camping is regulated by the HP Forest Department to protect the sacred site. The lake edge itself is off-limits for camping — all camps are pitched at 4,200 m in a designated pastureland zone 2 km before the lake. You walk the last 2 km to the shore. Registered operators (Parasol Camps, Chandratal Camping Retreat, Trekmunk) hold 90% of the slots. Package rates are ₹3,500–7,500 pp for one night including tent, food, guide.

The Milky Way experience at Chandratal is unmatched. There is no light pollution for 100 km in any direction. Elevation 4,300 m means 40% less atmosphere than sea level, so stars come out crisper. Best months: June and September (August has too much monsoon spillover from adjacent Kullu). Bring a fast wide lens (14–24 mm f/2.8) and a small tripod. Milky Way core rises east around midnight in June, earlier in July, later in September. Even iPhone 14 Pro's Night mode gets a shot.

Who should visit

  • Photographers chasing the Milky Way — this is one of India's best dark-sky sites accessible by road.
  • Serious travellers doing a Spiti circuit — Chandratal pairs naturally with Kaza, Ki, Kibber and Losar.
  • Anyone comfortable with high altitude (4,300 m) after acclimatising in Manali or Kaza first.
  • Motorcyclists on Manali–Leh — a common overnight detour off the main route.
  • Off-grid travellers who want 24–36 hours truly disconnected.

Who should skip

  • First-day Spiti visitors from the plains — must acclimatise for 2+ days at Manali or Kaza first.
  • Anyone with heart, blood pressure, or breathing conditions — 4,300 m is not negotiable.
  • Travellers under 12 or over 65 — altitude risk is real.
  • Anyone expecting hotels — only camps, and only 300 total beds for the season.
  • Off-season travellers Nov–Apr — the road is under 3 m of snow; do not attempt.

Chandratal Lake Shore Walk
Sacred lake · 4,300 m

Chandratal Lake Shore Walk

A 2.5 km walking path circumnavigates the lake at its shore. The route is not marked but easy — follow the pilgrim trail counter-clockwise (Buddhist tradition). Sunrise and sunset both hit the water differently; each half of the lake shifts colour depending on the light angle.

Time · 1.5–2 h walk · overnight to catch sunrise and sunset
Fee · Included in camp permit · lake entry is free
Hours · Walk-in any time · overnight camps 4 pm check-in

Pass gateway · East approach

Kunzum La Pass (4,590 m)

The 4,590 m Kunzum Pass separates the Lahaul (Chandra valley) side from the Spiti (Kaza) side. A cluster of stupas and prayer flags marks the col — every driver stops here to circle the temple thrice for safe passage. The Chandra river originates from the glacier just north.

Time · 30 min pass stop + 30 min chai at Batal on descent
Fee · Free
Hours · Pass open dawn to dusk · avoid crossing after 4 pm (weather turns)
Season · Late May to early October
Batal & Chacha-Chachi Dhaba (Chandra Dhaba)
Legendary rest stop · 3,900 m

Batal & Chacha-Chachi Dhaba (Chandra Dhaba)

Batal is a 3,900 m road-junction settlement — one dhaba, one BRO camp, and the 14 km spur road that turns north to Chandratal. Chacha and Chachi (Ram Bahadur and his wife) have run their tin-shed dhaba here since 1998; every Spiti traveller stops for their aloo paratha (₹80) and butter tea.

Time · 45 min stop for meal + break
Fee · None to sit · order food
Hours · 6 am – 8 pm (Chacha rises early)
Season · Late May to early October
Milky Way Astrophotography
Dark sky · Bortle 1

Milky Way Astrophotography

Chandratal is one of India's darkest accessible sites — Bortle Class 1 (pristine dark sky), zero light pollution for 100 km. Milky Way core visible naked-eye for 4+ hours on moonless nights. Combined with 4,300 m elevation (40% thinner atmosphere) the stargazing rivals Chile's Atacama.

Time · Overnight (Milky Way rises after 11 pm)
Fee · Included in camp stay · telescope hire ₹500 at some camps
Hours · Best 11 pm – 3 am moonless nights
Season · Jun (spring window), Sep (post-monsoon) — new moon nights
