Why visit Manali

Manali is not one town — it is a valley. The Beas river cuts through it for 25 km, and along that stretch sits Old Manali (backpacker cafés, hippie residue from the 70s), New Manali / Mall Road (family hotels, shopping), Vashisht (hot springs, pahari temples 4,000 years old), Solang (paragliding and snow), Naggar (Roerich's castle, apple orchards), and — since Atal Tunnel opened in October 2020 — Sissu and Keylong in Lahaul, now reachable in 90 minutes from town. Most travellers see Mall Road, Hidimba Temple, and Solang. That is a two-day trip. The valley deserves seven.

The name comes from Manu — the Hindu Noah, who according to the Rigveda re-created human life at the top of this valley after a great flood. The Manu Temple in Old Manali (rebuilt 1992 on a much older site) is the only temple in India dedicated to the sage. From that mythological headwater, the Beas flows south through Kullu district, giving the whole region its ancient name — Kulantpitha, 'end of the habitable world.' Beyond Manali the Rohtang pass (3,978 m) walled off Ladakh and Lahaul for six winter months every year until the BRO opened Atal Tunnel in 2020. That tunnel changed Manali — turned it from a summer terminus into a year-round gateway. You can now sleep in Sissu in December.

Geography carved the town. Manali sits on a shelf at 2,050 m where the Beas narrows and the Pir Panjal range rises 4,000 m on both sides. Deodar forests blanket the lower slopes; oak and rhododendron above; alpine meadows and glaciers above the treeline. Six named peaks are visible on a clear day — Hanuman Tibba (5,860 m), Deo Tibba (6,001 m), Indrasan (6,221 m), Friendship Peak, Ladakhi and Shitidhar. Solang Nala, 14 km north, is where the valley opens into a wide sunlit meadow — the reason paragliders, skiers and film crews return every season.

Culture is layered by geography. The lower valley (Kullu) is Kullu-Hindu — temple fairs (Dussehra is the region's Kumbh), Pahari architecture in stone and cedar, silver ornaments, hand-woven Kullu shawls with 200 registered co-op weavers. Cross into Lahaul via Atal Tunnel and within 20 minutes you are in a Tibetan Buddhist landscape — prayer flags, whitewashed gompas at Kardang and Shashur, seabuckthorn orchards, salt tea served with tsampa. Vashisht village at 2,300 m adds a third layer — a 4,000-year-old sulphur spring temple where locals bathe daily and travellers pay ₹50 for a private cabin.

The reason to add the neighbours: Old Manali has the cafés and the residual hippie 70s culture (Bob Marley posters in every second lane), but a serious trip goes further. Naggar Castle, 22 km south, is a 500-year-old Kullu wooden palace where Nicholas Roerich set up his studio in 1929 — the Roerich estate now houses two museums and is one of the finest villa-museums in the western Himalayas. Solang for adrenaline. Sissu for post-tunnel Lahaul homestays. Jibhi and Tirthan, 60 km south via Jalori pass, for the quiet forest valley Manali used to be. And the Manali–Leh highway — 428 km, 16 hours, 5 passes over 4,900 m — is the reason motorcyclists spend two years planning a single week here.

Who should visit

  • Adventure travellers 20–40: paragliding at Solang, rafting on the Beas, trekking Hampta and Bhrigu, snowboarding at Solang in winter.
  • Motorcyclists planning Manali–Leh: this is the launch point, and July–September the road is open.
  • Honeymooners looking for cinematic snow (Dec–Feb) and boutique wooden cottages in Naggar.
  • Families with kids 8–15: Solang snow, Van Vihar boating, Hidimba temple, Naggar Castle, plus decent hospitals.
  • Photographers: Rohtang snow walls (Jun), Solang paragliding (Apr–Oct), Sissu waterfall (May–Jul), Naggar temples all year.
  • Digital nomads: Old Manali cafés with fibre, ₹15,000/month cottages, 4G reliable, close to trailheads.
  • Spiti and Ladakh travellers: pre- and post-trip acclimatisation nights here before crossing the passes.

Who should skip

  • Anyone wanting a quiet hill station Apr–Jun and Dec–Jan — Mall Road traffic is a genuine gridlock in peak weeks.
  • Senior citizens with heart conditions going to Rohtang or Atal Tunnel — 3,100–3,978 m without acclimatisation is not advisable.
  • Monsoon travellers (Jul mid–Aug end): landslides on Kullu–Manali highway shut the road annually. Delays of 6–24 hours common.
  • Budget backpackers expecting Kasol prices: Manali is 30–50% more expensive than Parvati valley for equivalent stays.

Atal Tunnel & Sissu — Lahaul in 90 minutes

Opened October 2020 at 3,100 m, Atal Tunnel is the world's longest highway tunnel above 3,000 m — 9.02 km of horseshoe-shape engineering that cut the Manali–Keylong drive from 5 hours to 90 minutes. Bohemian quarter

Old Manali — Cafés, Manu Temple, Bridge

Across the Manalsu stream from Mall Road, 1.5 km on foot — Old Manali is the pre-1970s village that hippies discovered when Kasol was still Nepali. Wooden cottages, café strips lit by fairy lights, Manu temple at the top, and the last old bridge across the Manalsu — the Instagram anchor of the town.

Time · Half day for walking, full evening for café-hopping
Fee · Free · café spends ₹300–800/head

Naggar Castle & Roerich Estate

22 km south of Manali at 1,760 m — Naggar was the Kullu kingdom's capital for 1,400 years before Sultanpur took over in 1660. The 500-year-old Naggar Castle (all Deodar wood and stone construction, kath-kuni style) is now an HPTDC heritage hotel with rooms from ₹4,500. Nicholas Roerich, the Russian mystic painter, set up his studio 2 km up the hill in 1929. His estate now holds two of the finest small museums in the western Himalayas.

3 km across the Beas from Manali at 2,300 m — Vashisht is an old Pahari village named after the Vedic sage Vashishta. Its 4,000-year-old temple has natural sulphur hot springs (40°C) that bubble year-round. Public baths are free (separate men/women); private cabins ₹50 for 30 mins.

Time · Half day (bath + walk + café)
Fee · Free entry · Private bath ₹50 · Jogini trail free
Hours · 5 am – 10 pm (temples) · baths 24 h
Season · Year-round. Springs are actually best in winter — steam rising against snow is unforgettable.
Rohtang Pass (Seasonal, May–Oct)
3,978 m gateway

Rohtang Pass (Seasonal, May–Oct)

The classic 3,978 m pass that connected Manali to Lahaul before Atal Tunnel replaced it. Rohtang means 'ground of corpses' in local Bhoti — a warning about winter storms that once killed traders. Now a permit-controlled day excursion, open May–October only, with strict daily quotas.

Time · Full day trip · leave Manali by 6 am
Fee · Permit ₹550 + ₹50 congestion (rohtangpermits.nic.in, book 3 days ahead) · Snow rides ₹300–500
