Jispa
The Bhaga Valley Basecamp for Manali–Leh

Jispa is a 3,200 m Bhaga valley village on the Manali–Leh highway, 21 km beyond Keylong. For a century it has been the traders' overnight stop between Ladakh and Kullu; for the last 20 years it is where every motorcyclist and 4WD acclimatises before Baralacha La. Willow trees line the road, seabuckthorn orchards blaze yellow in September, and the Bhaga river runs turquoise-cold outside the door of every homestay.

Why visit Jispa

Jispa is not a destination — it is a rest stop that became beloved. Every Manali–Leh traveller passes through, and half decide to sleep here rather than push on to Sarchu. At 3,200 m it is high enough to matter for altitude but low enough not to sicken you; there are hot rooms, running water, warm dinners, and the Bhaga river 30 metres outside.

The village runs along a single stretch of highway with willows on both sides, a two-lane bridge over the Bhaga, and about 40 homestays plus half a dozen larger hotels and Swiss-tent camp resorts. Traditional Lahauli Buddhist-Hindu culture — most families speak Bhoti and Hindi, follow both traditions, celebrate Losar (new year) in February even though the village is snowed under. The old Kardang monastery (12th century) is 8 km south across the river from Keylong; Shashur monastery is 4 km above Keylong on the other side.

Acclimatisation is what makes Jispa strategic. Riders leaving Manali (2,050 m) for Leh (3,524 m) face two 5,000+ m passes — Baralacha La (4,890 m, 25 km north of Jispa) and Tanglang La (5,328 m). Doing the whole route in one day risks life-threatening AMS. The correct rhythm: Night 1 Manali, Night 2 Sissu or Jispa (3,200 m acclimatisation), Night 3 Sarchu or Pang (both 4,300+ m), then Leh on Day 4. Jispa's location — high enough to matter, low enough to sleep — makes it non-negotiable for anyone crossing to Leh.

Beyond the acclimatisation function, the surrounding valley is genuinely beautiful. Seabuckthorn (chuli) orchards ring the village — bright green in June, gold in September, glowing red-orange by October. The Bhaga river runs turquoise-blue through the willow line. Deepak Tal (Depaktal, 40 km north on the highway) is a small aquamarine lake at 3,900 m with roadside dhaba. Suraj Tal (70 km north) is a much larger sacred lake at 4,890 m just south of Baralacha — the source of the Bhaga river and considered sacred to Buddhist and Hindu Lahaulis alike. Both make photogenic detours the day you leave Jispa.

Since Atal Tunnel opened October 2020, Jispa is only 3 hours from Manali (90 min tunnel + 90 min road) instead of 6 hours over Rohtang. This has changed everything — Jispa is now a weekend destination in July–August, not just a Ladakh transit town. Weekend visitors from Delhi drive up Friday, spend Saturday walking to Deepak Tal, and drive back Sunday. Book weekends 30 days ahead in July–August.

Who should visit

  • Motorcyclists and 4WD drivers on Manali–Leh — mandatory acclimatisation night.
  • Weekend travellers from Delhi / Chandigarh (Jul–Aug) wanting a Lahaul weekend without full Ladakh commitment.
  • Trekkers heading to Baralacha, Zanskar, or the Miyar valley — Jispa is a base.
  • Photographers focused on autumn seabuckthorn colour (September–October).
  • Travellers with mild altitude sensitivity — Jispa (3,200 m) is the last comfortable stop before the 4,000+ m altitudes.

Who should skip

  • Anyone without any altitude acclimatisation from plains — spend a night in Manali or Sissu first.
  • Winter travellers (Nov–April) — road access is closed beyond Keylong; Jispa unreachable.
  • Anyone expecting café culture — Jispa is a highway village, not a Kasol-style traveller strip.
  • Travellers looking for luxury — one Swiss camp resort exists (Padma Lodge), rest is basic-to-mid.
