Overview

Pin Valley is a cold-desert national park in Spiti, connecting the Pin river to Parvati Valley via the 5,319m Pin Parvati Pass. India's most reliable snow leopard tracking is done here in winter, alongside ibex, blue sheep, red fox and lammergeier.

How to reach

  • Air: Bhuntar (KUU) via Manali route (Jul–Sep only) or Chandigarh (CDG) via Kinnaur (Jun–Oct)
  • Road: Kaza is the base — 200 km from Manali or 400 km from Shimla

Park rules

  • No smoking or fires inside park
  • Maintain 30 m distance from wildlife
  • Only registered snow leopard trackers permitted in winter
  • Carry all trash out — no bins in valley

No. Success rate is ~70% on a 7-day expedition with an experienced spotter. Longer trips improve odds.

Can I visit Pin Valley in winter?

Yes, but only via the Kinnaur route (Shimla-Reckong Peo-Kaza). Manali-Spiti road closes October to June.
