Road trip guide
Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali (NH44 + NH3)
India's most popular hill road trip. Smooth 4-lane highway till Kiratpur, then the scenic (and slower) Kiratpur–Manali expressway with 37 tunnels cutting travel time by 3 hours. Aim to cross Kullu before dusk — the gorge is narrow and landslide-prone.
Via: Panipat → Karnal → Ambala → Chandigarh → Kiratpur → Bilaspur → Sundernagar → Mandi → Pandoh → Kullu → Manali
Excellent till Kiratpur (NH44, 4-lane). New Kiratpur–Manali NH3 expressway is 90% complete with 37 tunnels; a few 20-30 km stretches still single-lane. Post-monsoon (Aug-Sep) check for landslides between Pandoh and Kullu.
Delhi 25–45°C. Manali 5–25°C summers, -5–10°C winters. Rohtang road opens May–Oct. Snow chains Nov–Mar past Manali.
