Tsuglagkhang Complex + Namgyal Monastery
The Dalai Lama's main temple, Namgyal Monastery (his personal monastery), and the Tibet Museum. Central to Tibetan Buddhism in exile.

McLeod Ganj (2,082 m) is a Tibetan town in an Indian hill: home of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama since 1960, the Central Tibetan Administration, and 20,000 exiled Tibetans. Under the sheer south face of the 4,400-m Dhauladhar range, its lanes hold monasteries, momo kitchens, meditation centres and the trailhead to Triund.
McLeod Ganj is where Tibetan Buddhism took refuge in 1959 and stayed. It's not a hill station imitating Tibet; it's Tibet-in-exile with monks in maroon robes, prayer wheels on every lane, and momos better than anything in Delhi. Add the vertical Dhauladhar wall right above town — you get spiritual depth + serious mountain in one stop.
McLeod Ganj was a British hill cantonment named after Lt-Gov Donald McLeod, founded 1848. Abandoned after the 1905 Kangra earthquake, it lay empty until 1960 when PM Nehru offered it to the 14th Dalai Lama and 80,000 Tibetans who had crossed the Himalayas in flight from Chinese occupation. The Tibetan government-in-exile — the Central Tibetan Administration — has run from here ever since.
The Tsuglagkhang Complex is McLeod's spiritual centre: the main Buddhist temple, Namgyal Monastery (the Dalai Lama's personal monastery), and the Tibet Museum documenting 1950s Chinese occupation. When His Holiness is in residence (check dalailama.com), public teachings run 3–5 days at a stretch — free, open to all, translated live.
Beyond spirituality, McLeod is a trekker + workation town. Triund (2,875 m, 9 km trek) is one of India's most photographed camping meadows — sunset over the Kangra valley on one side, sheer Dhauladhar wall on the other. Dharamkot village (30-min uphill walk from McLeod) is India's most established digital-nomad village: cafés with fibre, month-long yoga retreats, vipassana at Tushita.
Practical McLeod: it's split into three connected villages — McLeod Ganj (Main Square, monastery, most hotels), Bhagsu (waterfall, Israeli restaurants, budget backpacker scene), Dharamkot (upper, quieter, yoga/workation). All within 20-min walking of each other. Lower Dharamshala (9 km down, buses/trains/airport link) is separate.
