02 — The story

Why Kheerganga, really.

Kheerganga is a 12 km trek from Barshaini to a hot sulphur spring where Shiva is said to have meditated 3,000 years. Basic tented camps at the top, a Shiva temple, and one of India's most rewarding day-and-a-half hikes.

Sacred hot springs

Segregated pools at 42°C — closed briefly by NGT, now regulated.

12 km trek from Barshaini

5-6 hours up, 3-4 down; moderate difficulty via Nakthan and Rudra Nag.

Rudra Nag waterfall

Snake-shaped falls halfway — locals believe it's a Nag-devta.

Basic tented camps

₹500–1,000 pp with dinner; carry cash, no signal.

Shiva Parvati temple

Small shrine next to the springs — priests-in-residence in season.

Full moon nights

The unofficial highlight — go on/near purnima for silvered snow.

History

Kheerganga sits in a corner of Himachal shaped by centuries of Pahari kings, traders and pilgrims. The valley's identity — its temples, wood-and-stone homes and festivals — is still lived, not staged for visitors.

Culture

Local food, seasonal fairs and hand-woven textiles remain part of daily life around Kheerganga. Homestays are the fastest way in.

Geography

The landscape around Kheerganga moves between deodar forest, terraced fields and high ridges, with rivers and passes shaping every drive.

What makes it unique

Kheerganga rewards travellers who slow down — the best of it is not on the highway, but a short walk or drive off it.

Hidden gems teaser
