Khajjiar (1,920 m) is a 5-km oval grass meadow ringed by dense deodar forest, held in the Kalatope wildlife area of Chamba. In 1992 the Swiss embassy in Delhi formally designated it one of 160 'Mini Switzerlands' worldwide — the plaque is still at the meadow. Add a 12th-century Nag temple, wild horses grazing, and a 3-h drive to the Chamba valley below, and you have one of North India's most unlikely alpine postcards.
Khajjiar is a 5-km saucer of grass in a deodar amphitheatre — a landscape that genuinely does resemble a Swiss alp, hence the 1992 Swiss embassy designation. Do the meadow slowly, visit the 12th-century Khajjinag Temple on its edge, and either stay overnight to catch it empty at dawn or use it as a Dalhousie day trip.
Khajjiar is named after Khajjinag (or Khajji Nag) — the serpent king worshipped at the 12th-century Naga temple that stands right on the meadow's edge. The temple's roof is characteristic Chamba dhankund kath-kuni: pyramidal stone-slate over wooden pillars. The Pandavas are said to have visited during their vanavas. Nearby wood carvings depict the Kauravas hanging upside down — a folk motif unique to Chamba.
The meadow itself is a natural bowl held together by deodar roots — botanists call it a 'suspended lake' because the grassy floor floats on an ancient glacial lake underneath. In the middle of the meadow is a small permanent lake surrounded by grazing wild horses (some feral, some village-owned) that give the postcard shot.
In 1992 the visiting Swiss ambassador Willy P. Blaser was so struck by the resemblance to Swiss upland meadows that he formally proposed it as 'Mini Switzerland' — the 160th place globally to receive the designation. The Swiss embassy installed a stone plaque + a signpost showing the distance to Bern (6,194 km). The plaque still stands next to the lake.
Practical Khajjiar: it's 24 km from both Dalhousie and Chamba town, held in the Kalatope Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary. Most visitors do it as a half-day trip from Dalhousie, but staying one night at HPTDC Devdar or a Khajjiar homestay lets you see it at dawn (empty, wild horses at the water, first light on deodars) and at sunset (deodar shadow bands).
