Dharamshala
The Dalai Lama's Himalayan Home & Cricket-Under-Dhauladhar Capital

Dharamshala (1,457 m lower, 2,082 m upper/McLeod Ganj) is the winter seat of the Government of Tibet in Exile and home of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama since 1960. Built into the pine-clad ridge below the 5,200 m Dhauladhar wall, it's Himachal's Tibetan-Buddhist heart — home to Namgyal Monastery, the Tsuglagkhang complex, Norbulingka Institute, and the world's highest international cricket ground.

Why visit Dharamshala

Dharamshala is where Tibet lives in exile — its monasteries, its government, its Dalai Lama — set against the sheer 5,200 m Dhauladhar wall. It is also India's cricket-in-the-mountains icon, a paragliding gateway (Bir 60 km), a Triund trek base, and one of North India's finest café towns.

Dharamshala became a British hill station in the 1850s and a summer refuge for the Kangra Gurkha regiment. The 1905 Kangra earthquake destroyed much of Old Dharamshala. In April 1960, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama arrived from Mussoorie and established the Central Tibetan Administration at Gangchen Kyishong — 'Little Lhasa' has grown around it ever since.

The town is really two towns. Lower Dharamshala / Kotwali Bazaar (1,457 m) is the district administrative centre, Kangra Court, Zonal Hospital, HPCA Cricket Stadium. Upper Dharamshala / McLeod Ganj (2,082 m) is the Tibetan quarter — Tsuglagkhang temple complex with the Dalai Lama's residence, Namgyal Monastery, Tibetan Museum, monk-run cafés on every lane, and the trailheads for Bhagsu, Dharamkot, Naddi and Triund.

Dhauladhar means 'white ridge' — the 5,200 m wall visible from every McLeod Ganj rooftop, only 8 km away as the crow flies. This dramatic elevation change (2,082 m to 5,200 m in 8 km) is India's second-most vertical valley view after Nanda Devi. Sunrise on Moon Peak, Camel Peak and Arthur's Peak from Dharamkot is Dharamshala's signature photograph.

The Norbulingka Institute (8 km down, Sidhpur) preserves Tibetan applied arts — thangka painting, wood carving, statue casting, silk appliqué. The Gyuto Monastery (across the valley) is the seat of the Karmapa. The HPCA Cricket Stadium in Kotwali (elevation 1,317 m) is the highest-altitude international cricket ground with the Dhauladhar as backdrop.
