Bir
The Paragliding Capital of India & Nyingma Tibetan Monastery Village

Bir (1,400 m) is where you land — a green Kangra-valley village at the base of the Dhauladhar, home to Sherab Ling and Chokling monasteries and to India's most iconic paragliding site. Billing (2,400 m), 14 km uphill, is where you take off. The 26 km glide down between them is a Class-A world paragliding site and has hosted the Paragliding World Cup.

Why visit Bir

Bir is two experiences on one road. Look up — Billing at 2,400 m is India's flagship paragliding launch, a 26 km flight down the Kangra face of the Dhauladhar. Look inward — Bir Tibetan Colony hosts three major Nyingma monasteries and one of the best café-workation scenes in Himachal.

Bir was a small Kangra village until 1966, when Tibetan refugees resettled here and built the Chokling Monastery (Nyingma school). Sherab Ling Monastery (1975) — seat of the 12th Tai Situ Rinpoche — expanded the village into a Buddhist centre. Today the Tibetan Colony sits alongside the original Bir village, with the paragliding landing ground dividing them.

Billing (2,400 m), 14 km uphill on a rough tar road, became a paragliding site in the 1980s. The 26 km glide from Billing take-off to Bir landing (a 1,000-m altitude drop plus 26 km of thermal-lifted valley crossing) is a Class-A World Paragliding site — Paragliding World Cup was hosted here in 2015 and the Pre-World Cup in 2013. Season: October–November (best clarity + thermals) and March–June (thermals but hazy).

Bir's Tibetan Colony is where most travellers stay — Deer Park Institute (a Nalanda-tradition Buddhist college running short courses year-round), Silent Retreat Centre, and cafés like 4Tables, June16 and Garden Café make it India's top low-key workation town. Nyingma Monlam prayers happen at Chokling in Dec–Jan for 15 days — worth catching.

Bir also anchors two trek routes. Rajgundha (13 km, 2 nights) is a shepherd village at 2,300 m — offbeat, family-friendly, jaw-dropping. Barot Valley (65 km via Jogindar Nagar) is the trout-fishing weekend from Bir. Chamunda Devi + Baijnath (16 km) and Palampur tea gardens (35 km) are day trips.

Who should visit

  • Paragliders — first-time tandem or serious pilots (India's #1 site)
  • Digital nomads — Bir has become India's best small-town workation
  • Buddhism travellers — three major Nyingma monasteries, Deer Park Institute
  • Trekkers using Bir as base for Rajgundha, Billing–Barot
  • Café-culture couples wanting slow-paced Kangra
  • Photographers of paragliders + Dhauladhar + monasteries

Who should skip

  • Nightlife or shopping seekers — Bir is quiet by 9 pm
  • Anyone in Jul–Aug — no flying, heavy monsoon
  • Travellers expecting resort comfort (max is boutique cottage)
  • Vertigo-prone if paragliding is the reason (fly cautiously)
