The Delhi-Manali drive is 12-14 hours via Chandigarh, Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu. Overnight buses are common but self-drive works if you break the trip.
Route options
Route 1 (NH-44 + NH-3): Delhi → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali. Recommended — 4-lane till Kiratpur.
Ideal departure
4-5 AM from Delhi. Clears NCR before rush, reaches Mandi by lunch, Manali by 6 PM.
Fuel stops
Karnal (100 km), Ambala (200 km), Ropar (300 km), Bilaspur (400 km), Sundernagar (470 km).
Why not at night
Aut tunnel to Manali stretch has landslide risk and no lighting. Trucks dominate. Fatal accident rate spikes after 10 PM.
